What xHLDS adds to ReHLDS

  • -pingboost 5 on Linux

The server runs the tickrate you set, as far as its CPU allows, on an even schedule. In our lab, at 1250 it ran 35 to 45% more frames than -pingboost 2 for 7 to 11% more CPU. See how steady it stayed in our lab.

  • -pingboost 1 to 3 as in ReHLDS

The other modes behave as they do in ReHLDS, so you can keep the start command you use now.

  • Crash and hang fixes

xHLDS fixes crashes and hangs that stock ReHLDS still has. Every fix comes with a test or a written reproducer.

  • Kept up to date with ReHLDS

We check upstream ReHLDS daily and merge its fixes after review.

How steady it ran

We ran xHLDS and ReHLDS's timing side by side. Frames per second is how often the server updates the game.

Target: 1250 frames per second. xHLDS: 1249.8 on a busy map and 1249.6 on a normal one. ReHLDS's timing: 862.8 on a busy map and 922.8 on a normal one.

The ranges cover a normal map and a busy one. Tested on 23 October 2026 in our lab with test clients and bots, not real players.

How we measured
  • The target is sys_ticrate, the frames per second the server should run.
  • xHLDS started with -pingboost 5, the other server with -pingboost 2, which in xHLDS keeps ReHLDS's timing unchanged.
  • Both ran at the same time on one lab machine, each on its own CPU core, swapped between rounds.
  • Normal map: 16 network test clients and 12 bots. Busy map: 24 network test clients, 6 bots and 600 extra objects on the map, so every update the server sends carries much more.
  • At sys_ticrate 1000: xHLDS 1000.0 and 999.9, ReHLDS's timing 864.1 and 922.6 frames per second, busy then normal map.
  • Both read with xhlds_stats, one-minute windows, 2 to 3 rounds per load; each figure is their mean.
  • CPU of the server's main thread, in cores, normal then busy map: at 1250, xHLDS 0.0334 to 0.0340 and 0.1002 to 0.1003, -pingboost 2 0.0300 to 0.0306 and 0.0930 to 0.0938; at 1000, xHLDS 0.0325 to 0.0331 and 0.0925 to 0.0932, -pingboost 2 0.0305 to 0.0308 and 0.0917 to 0.0932.
  • The xHLDS build was the next release's code. The test clients cost the server less than players, and a server with many plugins does more work in every frame.

Tools to find what went wrong

Engine crashes are ours. Plugin crashes get a name.

When your server crashes, xHLDS tells you what crashed it. The server restarts as before.

  1. It finds the cause

Each crash report says where it happened: in xHLDS itself, in the game, or in a plugin, by name.

  2. It reaches us

On Hostsrc servers, reports come to us on their own. Elsewhere, add your Steam ID to server.cfg to send them. Without it, nothing leaves your server.

    xhlds_crash_owner "76561198000000001,76561198000000002"

Up to 8 Steam IDs of the 17-digit kind, in quotes.

  3. You see what to do

On crash.hostsrc.com you see your crashes and what to do next, with passwords and player IPs hidden. It is open to invited beta testers now, and to everyone soon.

  • In xHLDS: ours to look at

We look at every xHLDS crash that reaches us. When an update fixes it, the crash page says which one.

  • In a plugin: you know which

The crash page names the plugin, even one running inside AMX Mod X. Update it, remove it, or send the crash to its author.

How crash uploads work (opens in a new tab)

To turn crash reports off, start the server with -nocrashreport.

  • See what causes lag

Shows whether lag comes from the game and its plugins, the network or the server machine, and how each player's connection is doing. Type xhlds_stats in the console.

  • Some plugin mistakes no longer stop the server

Where it is safe, xHLDS skips the faulty call and keeps the server running. The console says which file made the mistake.

  • Hide console noise

List the lines you don't want to see, like a plugin's debug messages, in xhlds_confilter.txt. Crash reports still keep them.

Install xHLDS

  1. Replace two files

Copy engine_i486.so and hlds_linux into your server's folder, replacing the ones there. Metamod, AMX Mod X and your game stay as they are.

  2. Add the licence

Put your xhlds.lic next to engine_i486.so. We send it after you buy.

  3. Start and check

Start the server with your usual command, or add -pingboost 5. Type xhlds_license in the console to check the licence.

Every setting, command and launch option xHLDS adds is in the xHLDS settings and commands docs.

How the licence works

  • One licence covers one server: its IP address and port.
  • The licence is a file, xhlds.lic, that sits next to the engine.
  • Type xhlds_license in the console to see which licence the server uses and when it expires.
  • The server warns you before the licence expires. A renewed file is picked up at the next map change, without a restart.
  • If the IP or port changes, we reissue the licence.
  • Without a valid licence the server won't run. On Hostsrc servers no licence is needed.

One licence per server

Free on every Hostsrc CS 1.6 server. New servers install with xHLDS by default, and you can switch an existing server to it. The licence is for servers hosted elsewhere.

Billed yearly or monthly. Yearly is paid upfront for the year.

Billing period
  • Per server. One licence covers one server.
  • No free trial.

Who xHLDS is for

Admins who run Counter-Strike 1.6 servers. It is free on Hostsrc servers. A licence covers a server on another host or on your own machine.

Running many servers? Contact us for a provider licence.

On another host

Use xHLDS on a CS 1.6 server you rent elsewhere, if the host lets you replace the engine files.

On your own machine

Run it on a Linux server you manage yourself.

Linux, same plugin API

Release builds are for Linux servers, with no Windows builds for now. They use the same plugin API and binary names as ReHLDS 3.15, so Metamod and AMX Mod X stay as they are. Check your plugins on a test server first.

Built on ReHLDS

xHLDS is based on ReHLDS 3.15, which is free and MIT licensed. ReHLDS is copyright 2014 to 2025 the ReHLDS Contributors.
